Can the World's Tallest Skyscraper Also Be Smart? Ernest Flagg Thought So
In 1908, the skyline of New York City was forever changed by the arrival of the Singer Building — a towering symbol of architectural ambition and technological progress. At the time, it claimed the title of the tallest skyscraper in the world, but its significance extended far beyond its impressive height.
What truly set the Singer Building apart was its integration of advanced environmental controls, a concept well ahead of its time. Johnson Controls introduced a sophisticated system that allowed for precise regulation of indoor temperatures across multiple floors, demonstrating that buildings could do more than stand tall — they could think smart.
This early example of intelligent infrastructure laid the groundwork for the smart buildings we see today across the United Kingdom. From commercial offices in London to healthcare facilities in Manchester, Johnson Controls continues to lead the way in creating responsive, energy-efficient environments that prioritise comfort, safety and sustainability.

A Visionary Architect Meets a Global Brand
At the turn of the 20th century, architect Ernest Flagg was redefining the skyline. Commissioned by Frederick Gilbert Bourne of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, Flagg envisioned more than a towering headquarters. He imagined a building that combined elegance with efficiency — one that could think for itself.
Johnson Controls delivered on that vision with the Johnson System of Automatic Temperature Regulation. Featuring 1,200 thermostats and 1,800 valves, the Singer Building offered precision climate control across 47 storeys — a feat unmatched at the time.
