What Are Fire Doors & How Do They Work?

Bacteria and viruses are often passed on via the hands. A door handle can easily turns into a germ spreader which, in the current climate, is a problem that needs to be avoided wherever possible.
One way to overcome swing doors on high-volume routes becoming a risk to the health of the occupants is to convert them to automatic, hands-free operation.
Johnson Controls have a range of solutions which can be implemented to help to keep building occupants safe and speed up the flow of pedestrians.
Steel Fire Doors Or Timber Fire Doors?
At Johnson Controls, we understand the unique challenges each building presents. Our extensive portfolio offers both steel and timber fire doors designed to address specific needs.
If you are seeking robust durability, heightened security, and unparalleled fire resistance, our steel fire doors stand as a testament to industrial strength and longevity. For those drawn to aesthetic elegance without compromising on safety, our timber fire doors blend seamlessly with interiors, offering warmth, design versatility, and reliable fire protection.
Both types of fire doors comply with rigorous UK fire safety standards, ensuring your premises stay protected at all times.

Timber Fire Doors Explained
To put it simply, fire doors save lives.
The specialist timber fire doors offered by Johnson Controls are tested against the elements and are purpose-built to withstand roaring fires for as long as possible. Fire doors are essential for compartmentalising a building and delaying a fire spreading.
Fire doors have a few vital safety features and can be the difference between life and death. The most essential safety functions fire doors have are:
- When fire doors are closed, they form a barrier to stop the spread of fire, keeping the main escape routes free from smoke and flames and minimising the damage to your building
- When your fire doors are opened, they provide a means of escape for your building occupants to make it outside safely and quickly.
Made with a solid timber core, Johnson Controls supply high quality fire doors that are certified to withstand fire for 30 minutes (FD30), making them perfect for fire escape routes.
Our timber fire doors are also available with borosilicate or ceramic glass windows and an anti-shatter wire mesh for extra fire resistance compared to standard glass windows.
Maintaining Your Timber Fire Doors
Fire doors are on the front line for protecting lives, so they must receive regular inspections. The frequency will depend on how old your fire doors are and the condition that they’re in, but a minimum quarterly review is required as part of the Fire Safety Bill. Worryingly, the Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) highlighted that three-quarters of all fire doors inspected in 2019 were condemned as not fit for purpose. The diagram to the left details the rigorous testing fire doors must undergo to be safe.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO), landlords are responsible for ensuring their properties and tenants are safe. The ‘responsible person’ has a legal responsibility under the FSO and can be criminally prosecuted if they do not fulfil their duties.
The responsibility extends to the requirement for a fire risk assessment in all non-domestic buildings, including the common areas of flats or houses - so you must keep equipment like your fire doors up to standard.
If you own a commercial or non-domestic property, strict regulations ensure that your fire doors can withstand certain heat levels. Fire doors should always be fitted correctly by a competent installer, as they’re carefully-engineered fire safety devices.
