“Our fire suppression systems do save buildings and lives”.
“I’ll recommend this programme to others. As we are offered permanent employment once we have been admitted to the programme, you know that is a job that you can advance throughout the company in the long term.”
Levi Gibb, a soldier turned mechanical fire engineer
From soldier to fire suppression apprentice engineer, Levi continues to save lives.
When Levi was 16 years old, he was a junior soldier who received army training which prepared him to protect people’s lives. At about 22, after 6 years of staying with the army (though not having a chance to go on a mission), he decided to make a change in his career so he could stay closer to his family and spend more time with them. Yet, he still wanted to do something meaningful.
Why Fire Suppression?
When Johnson Controls Fire Suppression apprentice programme came to his attention, he knew this would be a great opportunity. “I have friends working in this industry so I know it’s a good job. I believe fire suppression is a good industry in which I can develop my career.”
Levi’s current role as an apprentice engineer requires him to work on customers’ sites. He said, “I like being on-site and working at different locations for projects, not sitting at the computer all day long.”
Recalling one unforgettable experience, Levi shared how he felt after witnessing the fire aftermath of one of his projects. “The aftermath scene reminded me that our fire suppression systems do save buildings and lives,” he said.
Happy with your job?
Asked about what he thinks about the apprenticeship he has been undertaking for two years, Levi said, “The relationship I’ve built with my colleagues has been great. We have a laugh every day that keeps the morale up. I also build trust in myself that I know I can do the job well.”
Did he ever come across any challenges? Levi said, “Maybe a bit on the technical side. But it only takes a minute to learn. It will just come naturally and you will get to love it.”
“I’ll recommend this programme to others. It’s a good job to get into. As we are offered permanent employment once we have been admitted to the programme, you know where you go next after graduation. It is a job that you can advance throughout the company in the long term."
